Climbing & Scrambling

Find your next challenge.

Get off the beaten track

For many of our members, walking is just the beginning.

North Wales is one of the UK’s best destinations for climbing and scrambling, with an incredible variety of rock, ridges and mountain terrain on our doorstep.

MCNW members enjoy everything from easier scrambles and classic mountain ridges to more technical climbing and challenging routes.

Scrambling

Scrambling sits somewhere between walking and climbing, and North Wales has some of the finest scrambling terrain in the country.

The Glyderau and Carneddau offer countless opportunities to leave the paths behind and explore the mountains from a different perspective.

Whether you’re looking to try your first scramble or already enjoy tackling more demanding routes, there’s plenty to discover.

Popular areas include:

  • Tryfan and the North Ridge
  • The Glyderau
  • The Carneddau
  • The Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa area
  • The Moelwynion
  • The wider mountains of North Wales
Climbing

North Wales has a long and famous climbing tradition, with crags and cliffs to suit a huge range of abilities and styles.

Our members climb at venues throughout North Wales and further afield, including both traditional and sport climbing. Some members also enjoy indoor climbing and use it as a way to keep active when the weather isn’t cooperating.

As with all club activities, climbing is organised by members rather than being a guided service. Members share their knowledge and experience, arrange climbing partners and often introduce others to new areas.

Share the adventure

One of the benefits of belonging to a mountaineering club is having other people to climb and scramble with.

You may find yourself discovering a new crag, tackling a classic ridge or simply learning something new from another member.

If climbing or scrambling is your thing — or you’d like to give it a try — come along and meet us.

Come and join us. The mountains are waiting.
